Richard Galloway Sr. (1625-1663) was born in London, England in 1625 and came to
Maryland in 1649. He married Hannah (maiden name unknown) (1620-1669) from Anne
Arundel, Maryland sometime prior to 1659.. They were members of the Society of Friends,
informally known as Quakers; a religious movement that began in the 1640's in England.
Richard and Hannah had two sons: Samuel (1659-1720) and Richard Jr. (1663-1736). Richard
Sr. acquired considerable land in Lord Baltimore's province in Maryland, thus indicating "he
was a man of good fortune and respectability." He died on January 28, 1663 in Anne Arundel at
the young age of 39, and one month before his son, Richard Jr. was born. In 1666, Hannah
married William Coale of West River Anne Arundel and had a son in 1667 named William. She
died at the age of 49 during child birth to their second son John, on November 20, 1669.
