Samuel Galloway (1659-1720) was born in West River, Anne Arunde1, Maryland on
August 7, 1659 to Richard and Hanna Galloway. He was a merchant and a planter. He married
Sarah Coale (1658-1684) from West River in 1680. They had two children Samuel Jr. and
Hanna. Sarah was only 26 years old when she died on February 24, 1684. Five years later, in
April 1689, Samuel married Anne Webb (1659-1722) from Maidstone, Anne Arundel,
Maryland. The wedding took place in London, England. Anne stood out as a particularly
notable Quaker minister. Anne was known in the community as "Mistress Anne." In 1694, she
was recognized for her importance to the community, her religious knowledge, and her position
within the Society of Friends. In the early 18th Century, Samuel purchased the "Cumberstone"
house, a magnificent house he called "The Gift." Samuel and Anne had twelve children, Ann
Galloway (1694-1728) was their fifth child. Of their 12 children, five never reached the age of
one. Samuel wrote a will on July 17, 1719 while still in Anne Arundel and died either along the
way to London or in London, England on January 21, 1720. He was buried in Friends' burying-
