Hugh Kinsey (1585-1667) was born in 1585 in England to the parents of Hughe (1566-) and Margaret (Smith) Kinsey (1568- ) of Cheshire, England. He married Margaret Johns
(1585-1667) in England in 1610. They had six children, their youngest being Elizabeth Kinsey
(1649-1714). Sometime before 1655, he and his brother, Robert, came to Virginia. In 1655,
Hugh purchased land in Lancaster County, on the north side of the Rappahannock River,
adjacent to 400 acres he already owned. The Rappahannock River is located in eastern Virginia, the site of an early settlement in the Virginia Colony. Apparently, Hugh was indebted to many
lenders in England and was often pursued in the courts for payment. He forfeited the Lancaster
plantation he inherited from his brother, Robert. His wife and six children joined him in
Lancaster around 1659. Due to persecution of Quakers in Virginia, he, his wife, and six
children, along with many other Quakers, moved to Maryland, he in 1659, and the family
members over a three year period of time starting in 1661.. They settled in a small community
in Anne Arundel, Maryland. Both Hugh and Margaret died there in 1667.
