My great grandmother, Caroline "Carrie" Schweigert or Swikert (1854-1896), was
born in Grand Prairie, Jefferson, Illinois around 1850. Her mother was from Alsace/Lorraine,
Germany. Carrie had several sisters. She married James Short and had eight children: grandma
Cordelia "Cora" Short (1874-1957), Elizabeth "Lizzie" (1878-) who died at an early age
during an epidemic, Jessie E. (1880-1900) who was described as a beautiful girt, died just before
she was to be married, Arthur (1883-1946), Addie (1889-1943), Florence (1892-1964) who
married Fred Keup, and two others who died during scarlet fever and diphtheria epidemics. All
their children were born in Joliet, Illinois .. I knew both Aunt Addie and Aunt Florence. Addie
lived only a few blocks from our house. She married Arthur "Bob" Cruise and her son's name
was George (1922-1978) who visited us often.
