Both Samuel Rue (1725-1767) and Aaltje Olshe Van Sandt (1727-1761) were born in
Bensalem, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Samuel was born on October 3, 1725 and Aaltje was
born in 1727. They were married on March 27, 1745 in the Reformed Dutch Church in
Feasterville, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Their first child, Mary Rue, was born in 1747 in
Bensalem, Pennsylvania, They moved to Kent County, Maryland prior to the birth of their other
children: Rachel (1749-), Joshua (1755-1796) and Richard (1760-1 844}. Unfortunately, Samuel
Rue's family didn't fare well in Maryland, The Rue families that stayed in Bucks County were
quite successful; their farms were large and their crops were tobacco. Following Aaltje's death
on February 5, 1761 at the young age of34, Samuel married Margaret Beck and they had one
child in 1767 named Amelia. Samuel, a farmer, chose to raise wheat instead of the cash crop
tobacco and fared poorly. When he died on October 29, 1767 at the age of 42 he left his estate
deeply burdened in debt. Also, when Samuel died, he left his seven year old son, Richard, an
orphan, and nothing to bequeath to his children.
