James Rue (1685-1759) was born in Staten Island, Richmond County, New York in
1685. He obtained land in Staten Island from his brother John and took up farming. He was the
first of his brothers, however, to move away from Staten Island. In 1710 he is listed as a member
of the First Dutch Reform Church (actually a Presbyterian Church) in Bensalem Bucks County,
Pennsylvania. In 1718, he purchased by lease and release from the Van Sandt family 150 acres
of land along the south side of Neshaminy Creek and across the creek from where his brother
Matthew eventually would have his farm. James married Mary Maris (1705-1771) from
Bensalem in 1724. Mary Maris was born in 1705. They had ten children including a son named
Samuel who was born in Bensalem on October 3, 1725. All oftheir children were baptized at
the First Dutch Reform Church. James died at the age of74 on December 20, 1759 and buried in
Beechwood Cemetery located in Hulmeville, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. His wife, Mary,
survived comfortably on what he bequeathed to her. She died on April 23, 1771.
