DEATH OF MRS. SONDER
------
Former Bishop Lady Passes Away
In North Dakota
------
Mary Katherine Sonder, nee Heinhorst,
was born July 10th, 1873, at Bishop,
Mason county and died at her home in Harvey,
North Dakota, Sunday evening, June 30th at 5:45
after an illness of four weeks from
leakage of the heart. Her age was
44 years, 11 months and 20 days.
At the age of thirteen years she
was converted to God and united with
the church of the Evangelical Association,
of which she remained a faithful member.
April 18th, 1897, she was united
in holy wedlock to the Rev. A. H. Sonder,
who served as the assistant pastor on
Mason circuit at that time.
Their first field was Roberts, Ill.,
where they served two years, after
which Rev. Sonder joined the Dakota
Conference and has since served the
following appointments, Ellendale,
North Dakota; Yankton, Parker, Scotland,
and Clear Lake, South Dakota, and is
serving at present time Harvey, North Dakota.
To this happy union were born five
children, a son, Clinton A., and four
daughters, Alys M., Edna B., Alberta C.,
and Ruth M. E. She leaves to mourn her
altogether too early departure, her devoted
husband, the son the four daughters,
her beloved aged mother (her father preceding
her 8 years ago), three sisters, one adopted
sister, many other relatives and a host of
friends.
Thus another great life has closed.
Great in that she was a devoted Christian
woman, ever exerting a very helpful
influence wherever her lot was cast.
She was of a happy bright disposition,
always looking on the bright and cherry {it says cherry}
side of life, hopeful to the last.
It can well be said of her, she did what
she could, gladly sharing the trials and
disappointments of her husband and as he
labored on his several fields and when
called upon to move as a preacher often
is, she gladly made the sacrifices of a
convenient home and home surroundings,
many warm friends, for a place less
desirable, and this all without a complaint.
She was an efficient preacher's
companion, because of her ability to
meet and greet people, lead in singing
and serve as a teacher and leader in
such organizations as the Sunday school,
Mission band and W. C. T. U.
It can truly be said of her, "A
precious one from us is gone, a voice
we loved is stilled; a place is vacant
in church and home, which never can
be filled." She has gone, but her
influence lingers and will bear many
folds of precious fruit.
"Servant of God, well done!
Thy glorious warfare is past,
Thy battle's fought, the race is run,
And thou art crowned at last,
Jesus while our hearts are bleeding,
O'er the spoils that death has wong,
We would at this solemn meeting,
Calmly Say, "Thy will be done."
By thy hand the boon was given.
Thou hast taken but thine own;
Lord of earth and God of Heaven,
Evermore "Thy will be done."

The funeral services were held on
friday, July 5 at 2 o'clock from the home
of Mrs. Mary Heinhorst on Pleasant Row
and then in the Zion Evangelical church.
Rev. E. E. Plapp had charge of the services.
Rev. Fred Schwartz of Lockport, Ill.,
former pastor, preached the sermon.
Interment was made in the Bishop cemetery.
There were many floral offerings.
The pall bearers were Melvin Johnes,
Byron Woehrle, Arthur Heinhorst,
Robert Himmel, Wm. Heinhorst and Samuel Himmel.

Dad's mother's name was Mary Kathryn (Himmel) Sonder (1873-1918), but went by
the name Kathryn or Katie. She was born on July 10, 1873 in Bishop, Illinois. Kathryn
married Reverend Albert Henry Sonder on April 18, 1897. My dad was the first of their five
children: Clinton (1898-1976), followed by four daughters, Alys (1900-1993), Edna (1903-
1980), Alberta (1907-1978) and Ruth (1914-2001). Grandma Kathyrn Sonder died at the young
age of 45 in Harvey, North Dakota on June 30, 1918, a Sunday, after an illness of four weeks
from "leakage of the heart." My dad was closely attached to his mother. An article in a
newspaper wrote that "She gladly shared the trials and disappointments of her husband and when often called to move, gladly made the sacrifices of a convenient home and many warm friends,
for a place less desirable, and this all without a complaint. She was an efficient preacher's
companion because of her ability to meet and greet people, lead in singing, serve as a Sunday
school teacher, and lead the Mission Band." Her body was brought to the home of her mother in Bishop, Illinois. Funeral services were held on Friday at 2 p.m. at the Evangelical church and
buried in the Zion Cemetery north of Bishop." Her remains were later interned on December 9,
1941 Mount Emblem Cemetery, Elmhurst, Illinois, Section J, Lot #1179, grave 2. Dad did not
arrive in time for her funeral.
