John Short Jr. (1813-1903) was born in September, 1813 in Woodford County,
Kentucky. He was baptized at Pisgah Church in Woodford, along with his brother Samuel. John
married Elizabeth Hardesty (1814-1911) in Woodford Kentucky around 1835. In 1836, while
still living in Kentucky, Elizabeth gave birth to their first child, Joseph Short. Sometime
between 1836 and 1840, they moved to Benton, Missouri where she gave birth to Mary J. Short, and in Benton in 1847, my great-grandfather James Short (1847-1924) was born. By 1850, the
family had moved to Monroe, Missouri and then from 1870 through 1910 they made their home
in Bates County, Missouri near Butler City. They had in total nine children. John Short Jr. had
owned several farms in Missouri where he most likely grew tobacco. In those days, it was
common to move from place to place where the land was fertile. John Short Jr. died in 1903 at
the age of 90. Elizabeth died in 1911 at the age of97. Both were buried In Oakhill Cemetery,
now known as Double Branch Cemetery, which is located about 10 miles southeast of Butler.
